Indianapolis airport scores another nonstop flight to San Francisco

Now that Alaska Airlines owns Virgin America, it has targeted the Bay Area for "the single largest new market announcement" in its history, the company said Thursday.

The new flights build on previously announced Alaska Airlines SJC routes, including daily service into the NY area with SJC‐Newark starting March 12, and three daily flights to Burbank starting March 16.

"Adding this flight-at this time-sends a clear message about the value Alaska Airlines sees in Indianapolis", Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez said in a written statement.

Alaska will introduce daily service to Tucson, a new destination for Silicon Valley's airport, beginning August 28, and will launch service to Austin with daily flights beginning August 28.

As an incentive to establish that service, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered United up to a $1.5 million annual backstop to cover any gap between the airline's revenue and a contracted minimum.

United Airlines now flies nonstop to San Francisco.

Alaska Airlines did not request any IEDC incentives for its new San Francisco flight, Gillham said. With the additional flights, Alaska Airlines and Virgin America will offer guests 125 daily nonstop flights to 42 destinations from the three major Bay Area airports.

The flights to and from Kansas City and San Francisco are scheduled to begin September 18.
