While speaking before federal, state and local law enforcement Wednesday, the former Alabama senator addressed the surge of illegal drugs flooding the country and said the only way to end the opioid and heroin crisis was through tactical criminal enforcement, better treatment options and stronger prevention efforts, not by offering addicts something that's "only slightly less terrible", like legal marijuana.
Insisting that the federal government should return to a Nancy Reagan-style, 1980s anti-drug campaign - "educating people and telling them the bad truth" about controlled substances - Sessions conflated the nation's opioid addiction and overdose crisis, which now claims 140 lives a day, with marijuana, a drug he said will "destroy your life".
Sessions' Justice Department, which contains the Drug Enforcement Administration, technically classifies marijuana and heroin at the same level of restriction; they are both now Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act.
"I've heard people say we could solve our heroin problem with marijuana", he said. But too many lives are at stake to worry about being fashionable.

The Post reports that Sessions also said after his speech that he was "dubious" of medical marijuana and research that points to it being an alternative painkiller and treatment option for opioid addicts.
Specifics of a program to educate Americans on the dangers of drugs and addiction weren't laid out on Wednesday.
The Drug Policy Alliance, a group working to reform harsh drug laws, said that Sessions' comments reflect a radical departure from the DOJ's focus on counterterrorism and the prevention of cyberattacks from foreign criminals under former President Barack Obama.
"[Sessions is] seeking to divide us", says Nia Ventall, an employee of Planned Parenthood who joined the protesters.

The Justice Department says the Attorney General asked for their resignations because it ensures a uniform transition for the Trump administration. At the time that Project Exile was launched, Richmond had one of the highest five murder per capita rates in the nation.
"If you look at the president's tweet, he said wiretapping in quotes".
During Project Exile's first year, Richmond homicides declined 33 percent and armed robberies declined 30 percent.
Other topics Sessions discussed during his speech included introducing a Justice Department task force on crime reduction and public safety, and stepping up prosecution for gun crimes and drug users. Gun crime fell over the same period in cities that didn't use Project Exile, he said.
