New Scottish Independence Vote Spells Division, Economic Uncertainty

"This is at a time when the Scottish people, the majority of the Scottish people, do not want a second independence referendum".

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed she will ask for permission to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence.

"The tunnel vision that SNP has shown today is deeply regrettable", May said.

He finished: "It makes Ruth Davidson look like the only serious heavyweight politician in Scotland who cares about the wellbeing of the Scottish people".

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that the Scottish government would hold a second independence referendum.

The move comes after almost two thirds (62 percent) of Scots opted to stay in the European Union in June 2016, but the United Kingdom as a whole voted for Brexit.

She said she had made good faith proposals for a compromise but had been met with a "brick wall of intransigence".

Scotland, in contrast to the rest of the United Kingdom, had voted to remain in the European Union (EU) in last June's referendum.

Many nationalist activists heading to the SNP conference starting on Friday are hopeful about the prospect for independence.

Scotland must not be "taken down a path that we do not want to go down without a choice", Ms Sturgeon said.

"I am ensuring that Scotland's future will be decided by ... the people of Scotland", Sturgeon said in a speech at Bute House, her official residence in Edinburgh.

Scotland had worked "really hard" to find an agreement on Britain leaving the European Union but had been confounded by Prime Minister Theresa May's government, Sturgeon said.

While she added "the option of "no change" is no longer available", she insisted Scots could " still decide the nature of change".

Mrs May has so far not said she would block attempts to hold a referendum, but may try to delay the vote until after the Brexit process.

Sterling is 0.45 per cent up against the dollar - unchanged by Ms Sturgeon's remarks that she was confident of holding and winning a second vote. It didn't say Monday whether it would do so, but said an independent ballot would be divisive.

"May would like the referendum to take place after Brexit has been negotiated", said Wyn Grant, professor of politics at Warwick University.
