Pandora Media Inc (P) Premium Roll Out is Officially Underway

Free tier and new users will be able to try the new service in the coming weeks.

Pandora Media (P) on Wednesday will begin rolling out its subscription on-demand streaming music service, called Pandora Premium, which will put it in direct competition with Spotify and Apple Music.

The service, which will cost $9.99 per month, will allow users to pick songs and create playlists, a contrast to Pandora's free service, which feeds listeners songs based on their individual preferences. But these extra perks come at a cost of $9.99/month, according to Pandora.

'Bathroom Bill' Clears Texas Senate but Still Faces Hurdles
That's the same margin by which the Republican-controlled Senate approved the bill a day earlier. The bill will now head to the House after passing the Senate in a 22 to 6 vote.

Pandora Premium will let you add a few songs to a new playlist and then give you the option to fill it out with similar songs so you don't have to go through the work of filling it out yourself. Album or playlist with you even when you don't have service or Wi-Fi with Premium.

Entering the premium music streaming segment this late might seem like a tough task, with over 100 million people already subscribed and committed to their streaming service of choice. Apple has more than 20 million subscribers to Apple Music. "That's why they spend more time with Pandora than any other music service", said Tim Westergren, founder and CEO of Pandora.

Users who aren't paying for Pandora Plus can sign up at the same page for access to the March 15 trial, but their trials will vary in length between 30 and 60 days. Every song you've thumbed up on Pandora is immediately available in your "My Thumbs Up" playlist. Each of these features is likely to limit the pain points in transitioning to the new service in Wedbush's view, as the primary obstacle for music streamers in changing platforms is likely the inability to transfer playlists and previously-downloaded tracks across platforms, while existing Plus users can leverage their existing usage data and personalized metrics to build out Premium playlists and form listening habits naturally with minimal friction. If you're a student, you can get Spotify Premium for just $4.99/month, and families (up to six users) can get Spotify Premium for $14.99/month. Pandora Premium is now currently available on both Android and iOS, Google Chromecast, as well as across automotive consoles. Pandora Plus is the $4.99 per month version that removes ads from the personalized internet radio service, as well as adding more skips. Premium will come to desktop computers and other devices in the coming months, the company says.

Now, Pandora is preparing to take everything it's learned from its internet radio business and transition it over to compete against the big dogs with Pandora Premium.
