According to the report, produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations, the top four countries all rank highly on factors associated with happiness: caring, freedom, generosity, honesty, health, income and good governance.
Countries that achieved positive results have "high levels of mutual trust, shared goal, generosity and good governance", said Helliwell, a professor at the University of British Columbia.
The report reviews the state of happiness in the world and shows how the new science of happiness explains personal and national variations in happiness.
