Rotten beef sold by top companies in Brazil

Brazil, the world's biggest exporter of red meat, has been hit by a beef scandal that could seriously damage the country's worldwide reputation.

Three meat-packing plants have been closed and another 21 are being investigated.

The government is also trying to diminish the impact the scandal could have on the ailing economy - Brazil is the world's largest beef and chicken exporter, accounting for nearly a fifth of global exports.

At least 30 people have been arrested in the scandal, with Brazilian police raiding more than a dozen processing plants.

President Michel Temer took ambassadors from the main importer countries to an all-you-can-eat steak dinner Sunday to prove local meat is safe to eat.

Tom Brady's stolen jerseys linked to Mexican newspaper executive
A pair of New England Patriots jerseys worn by Tom Brady in two Super Bowls have been recovered and returned to the team. Ortega posed as someone covering the Super Bowl for an global media outlet and took the jerseys following both games.

The report said that police uncovered about 40 cases of meatpacking companies who bribed inspectors in exchange for overlooking unsanitary practices at the facilities.

"The aim of the investigation is not the Brazilian health monitoring system, but a few deviations in conduct by a few officials and a few firms", he said.

Both companies deny irregularities.

BRF could prove more vulnerable to the scandal since a larger share of its operations are physically based in Brazil, while JBS derives most of its sales from overseas, according to a report by Goldman Sachs analysts led by Luca Cipiccia.

Brazilian meat is exported to more than 150 countries, with principal markets including Saudi Arabia, China, Singapore, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands and Italy.

Uber president's exit adds to string of controversies
He signed off by saying the company has "thousands of wonderful people at the company" and he wishes everyone at the company well. Two BBC sources at the company have said that Kalanick could step down once the new COO is in place.

The claims appear to relate to discovery of frozen meat being used by a small value-adding company where use-by dates on product had expired.

Meeting ambassadors from Europe, the United States and China, Mr Temer said his government remained confident about the quality of Brazilian meat.

"The government reiterates its trust in the quality of this Brazilian product", Temer said.

The scandal broke just days before the start of negotiations to seek a free-trade accord between the European Union and several South American countries including Brazil.

Among those companies under investigations are meat giants JBS and BRF.
