Petersburg has a 9 percent unemployment rate, while 43 percent of its children live in poverty, according to the County Health Rankings report.
Nationally, the report says premature deaths are rising because of an increase in deaths among people aged 15 to 44 from a variety of factors, including drug-related deaths which "are a clear driver of this trend". Drug overdose and other injury deaths heavily influenced the rise in premature death, which the researchers considered deaths that could have been prevented.
