Boris Johnson cancels visit to Moscow due April 10 - Foreign Office

Earlier in the day, the UK government official website announced that Johnson had canceled his visit to Moscow, scheduled for April 10, due to the recent developments in Syria with the foreign secretary having said that his priority was to maintain positive relations with the United States and other countries in the run up to the G-7 meeting.

Mr Johnson spoke with USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who is still due to visit Russian Federation, before making his decision.

Johnson discussed the move with his U.S. counterpart last night after the USA launched 59 tomahawk cruise missiles at the Shayrat airbase in Syria, following intelligence that deadly chemical weapons attacks on civilians originated there.

He said Britain called on Russian Federation to do everything possible to bring about a "political settlement in Syria".

President Trump would like to terminate the two dozen agreements reached between police departments and the Obama administration. On Tuesday, city officials told the judge in a court filing that they oppose a 90-day extension to the hearing.

Johnson said his priority was to continue contact with the United States and other countries to provide global support for a ceasefire in the days leading up to the G7 meeting on April 10 and 11.

Johnson said he was working to bring together other "like-minded partners" to "explore next steps soon", according to the report.

"For his part, Tillerson on Friday said he was disappointed" by Russia's reaction "because it indicates their continued support" for the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Tillerson would be able to deliver a "clear and co-ordinated message to the Russians" after the meeting between the world's seven leading industrialised nations, he said.

Russian Federation earlier this week denied a chemical weapons attack took place in Syria saying the deaths in Khan Sheikhoun were caused by a Syrian regime airstrike on a rebel-controlled chemical weapons factory on the ground. No personnel at the base uses gas masks, he said.

Iran's president Hassan Rouhani argued the move meant "all the terrorists in Syria are celebrating this U.S. attack". The Russian government has been implicated in numerous attacks against Syrians opposed to Assad's rule - something Moscow adamantly denies.
