McCain: Russia cooperated with Syria in chemical attack

Speaking after meeting Serbian president-elect Aleksandar Vucic, Gabriel said he could not give a precise date when Serbia could enter EU.

McCain came to Belgrade a day after supporting words for Vucic came from one of NATO's top officials, Admiral Michelle Howard, who heads NATO's Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gabriel who will visit Kosovo on Thursday and Albania on Monday on his Balkan tour, urged Balkan states to overcome their divisions to integrate into the European Union.

McCain said he and Vucic also spoke about the importance of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue under EU's auspices, where progress has ben made "thanks to President Tomislav Nikolic and PM Aleksandar Vucic", and added that the U.S. was "Serbia's most active military partner" taking up about 90 percent of such activities.

Gabriel said he remained concerned about developments elsewhere in the region, where "demons of the past" were arising once again.

The US Senator thanked Serbia for its contribution to the fight against the Islamic State, ISIS, but also expressed concern about Russian actions in the region and attempts to topple the government in a country that is "a neighbour of Serbia", referring to October's alleged coup attempt in Montenegro. The latest anti-government demonstrations took place on Tuesday in Belgrade and other Serbian cities without incident.

Vucic, Serbia's current prime minister, received 55 percent of the vote in the presidential election, enough to avoid a runoff.

Vucic has dismissed the allegations.

Vičić said that he presented Senator McCain the situation in the region, especially Belgrade's initiative to continue the dialogue with the Albanians in Brussels and said that our country will invest a lot of strength in the preservation of peace.

"For our soldiers and officers it is essential to take part in joint peacekeeping operations", he said and recalled that past year they completed eight major joint exercises and about a hundred joint activities.

"We wish to have good traditional relations with Russian Federation although we are strategically on the EU path", he said, adding that he got the assurance from McCain that the United States will support Serbia in its European integration.
