Jackie Robinson statue unveiled at Dodger Stadium

Since 2004, every player and coach in the major leagues wears No. 42 on April 15 in honor of Robinson breaking the color barrier. Robinson, a Pasadena native, made baseball history when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in April, 1947. Weighing in at over 700 pounds, the statue will be secured with a steel rod and is said to have three quotes chosen by Robinson's family.

The statue is located on the reserve level of the third-base side of the park, which is the most crowded entry of Dodgers Stadium according to ESPN.

It was reported on Friday that the Dodgers were revealing a statue of Robinson just outside the stadium in honor of Jackie Robinson Day.

The Dodgers had opened the 1947 season at home against the Boston Braves, and 26,623 fans attended the game at Ebbets Field.

Howard Kornfeld, couldn't get there immediately so he sent his son, Andrew Kornfeld, on an overnight flight to Minnesota. The suitcase had a tag on it bearing the name "Peter Bravestrong", which investigators say could be an alias for Prince.

"It was wonderful", Sharon Robinson said, "to share that with Mom".

There was, of course, much more, and yet it pales in comparison to Robinson's impact on baseball to this day. Robinson went 0-for-3 in his debut, won 5-3 by the Dodgers.

"They really wanted me to get the likeness and I assured them I'd be working very hard on that", he said. I've always tried to imagine what that culture shock was like for Jackie Robinson, going from California to the south and then into the Negro Leagues. "That was the element I spent the most time on to capture an expression that would be happening in that moment".

Robinson's wife Rachel and children Sharon and David were in attendance along with a host of Dodgers legends. Their other son, Jackie Jr., died in a vehicle accident in 1971.

Robinson's playing days ended in 1956 and he died in 1972, but the Dodger Stadium statue will be a constant reminder of what he accomplished, both on, and especially off, the field. White baseball players, who likely spend less time thinking about racial discrimination than their black counterparts do.
