Sessions on Hawaii remark: 'Nobody has a sense of humor'

"I'd like to see this be a circumstance once again where we understand what the wall would mean and where", Sessions, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, said on CNN's "New Day". "He told me to secure the Southwest border-all of our borders, and, of course, focusing now on the Southwest border-and to take the worst of those that are in our country illegally, take them-look for them and deport them".

Sessions' comments were referring to the Hawaii judge who issued a nationwide restraining order on President Trump's revised executive order that calls for suspending the entire refugee program for 120 days and halting immigration from six countries in the Middle East and Africa for 90 days.

"This order is lawful", Sessions said on Sunday, "it's within [the president's] authority constitutionally and [his] explicit statutory authority". "We're going to defend the president's order".

Sessions went on to defend Trump's travel ban, without returning to the Hawaii issue.

Trump in a recent interview refused to say whether or not he would sign a spending bill that does not include border wall funding, but Cabinet officials have insisted the administration will get money for the wall.

Sessions said the ruling unfairly psychoanalyzed the president's motives by weighing the president's past statements about the intention of the ban.

Hawaii's two Democratic senators, Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, pilloried Sessions for discriminating against their state and for undermining the judicial branch.

Sen. Mazie Hirono called the comments "ignorant and risky".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions prepares to speak before a meeting of the Attorney General's Organized Crime Council and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Executive Committee on April 18. Island of Hawaii has 186,000 people. And that island is called Oahu. "Please use the google".

That's his assessment after drawing ire for seeming to dismiss the state of Hawaii as merely "an island in the Pacific".

Representative Tulsi Gabbard, another high-profile Democrat, wrote that she was "amazed [Sessions] doesn't know Hawaii is a state" and added: "Another reason Sessions should step down".
