Rare Briefing: Entire Senate Being Called to White House on North Korea

The Senate doesn't get briefed by four top administration officials at the White House unless there is an urgent crisis brewing.

While senators typically travel to Washington, D.C., for foreign policy and national security matters, the briefing marks an unusual event.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer confirmed the upcoming briefing, for all 100 senators, on Monday. During the meeting, the lawmakers will be allowed to air their views and ask questions about the matter.

Aides, quoted by Reuters, say the House of Representatives is seeking a similar briefing on North Korea.

The image of senators meeting with Trump at the White House on a top national security concern could be touted by the White House as a key moment in the run-up to Trump's 100th day in office - a milestone that the president has mocked in recent days but that his administration is working aggressively to promote.

On Monday, Trump called for tougher United Nations sanctions on the North, saying it was a global threat and "a problem that we have to finally solve".

USA officials are concerned about North Korea's nuclear and missile tests, and threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies.

A sixth North Korean nuclear test has been anticipated for some months now.

China, North Korea's sole major ally, has in turn been angered by Pyongyang's belligerence, as well as its nuclear and missile programs.
