Senate Confirms Deputy Attorney General in Charge of Russia Probe

Rosenstein's nomination was approved Tuesday by the Senate in 94-6 vote. Rosenstein's confirmation hearing came the week after Sessions announced that he was recusing himself from any presidential-campaign-related investigations after The Washington Post reported that he had met with the Russian ambassador twice during that campaign and had not disclosed that fact at his confirmation hearing.

Following which Senate Democrats pressed Rosenstein to recuse himself and appoint a special prosecutor for any Russian Federation investigations, to which and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer informed that Rosenstein agreed to appoint a special prosecutor if it was needed.

Rosenstein, first appointed to the Maryland post by President George W. Bush in 2005, was nominated to his new job by President Donald Trump. Rosenstein will now decide whether to appoint an independent prosecutor in that matter.

"How I would handle an investigation.is how I would handle any investigation", Rosenstein said. The Senate voted unanimously in 2005 to confirm his nomination as US attorney. "From all I see and know about him, I believe Mr. Rosenstein will keep his promise for integrity and independence".

A Harvard-trained lawyer who lives in Bethesda, Rosenstein prosecuted Black Guerrilla Family gang members, inmates and corrections officers who orchestrated a massive contraband smuggling scheme inside the Baltimore City Detention Center in 2013. "As far as I'm concerned, every investigation conducted by the Department of Justice is an independent investigation".

The deputy attorney general is responsible for day-to-day operations and oversight of the Justice Department's law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The senators voting against Rosenstein's confirmation Tuesday were all Democrats: Cory Booker (N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Kamala D. Harris (Calif.), Catherine Cortez Masto (Nev.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.).

The Maryland U.S. attorney has worked for both Democratic and Republicans presidents.
