Bill O'Reilly's Fox News Ousting Draws Polarized Response on Twitter

USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers said that she complained of inappropriate comments made by Bill O'Reilly, but was told by then-Fox News chief Roger Ailes that there was nothing he could do about it because O'Reilly made too much money for the network.

Fox News has cut ties with popular conservative host Bill O'Reilly following allegations of sexual harassment and a loss of advertisers.

O'Reilly's exit, which was first reported by NY magazine, follows that of former Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, who was forced to resign in July after being accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women, including former anchor Gretchen Carlson.

The announcement came just hours after the combative and right-wing television personality was photographed shaking hands with Pope Francis in St Peters Square during his holiday in the Italian capital.

O'Reilly said in the statement at the time that he had settled only to spare his children from the controversy. While O'Reilly denied wrongdoing, dozens of his show's advertisers fled within days even as O'Reilly's viewership increased. His own 9 p.m. slot will be replaced by The Five, a show that hosts a roundtable of commentators on different issues.

Dozens of Palestinians injured in West Bank clashes
Many are also imprisoned under a controversial administrative detention law, which allows Palestinians to be held without charge. As per Palestinian figures, Israel is now holding more than 6,500 Palestinians which includs 57 women and 300 children.

Powers said that after the incident she went to O'Reilly's executive producer and said, "He needs to apologize and he needs to never do that again, or I am not doing his show anymore". The Times also reported that yet another woman reported allegations against O'Reilly on Tuesday to the parent company.

Gabriel Sherman, a long-time O'Reilly-watcher at NY magazine, reported Wednesday before the announcement that Fox executives were in the final negotiations with O'Reilly, mainly over the timing of an announcement and whether he would be allowed to say good-bye to his audience.

Among Mahoning Valley leaders responding to O'Reilly's firing is William Binning, former chairman of Youngstown State University's political science department and the Mahoning County Republican Party, who said O'Reilly had a great influence on conservatives in the country.

Even with O'Reilly gone from Fox, Sesno said he doubts that the public appetite for his brand of "angry, high-decibel" chatter will give way to a new regard for civility.

"The O'Reilly Factor" generated $178 million in advertising revenue in 2015, according to Kantar Media.

The substitute host later excerpted the Murdochs' Wednesday memo to Fox News employees about their move.

O'Reilly's dismissal does not signal any change of direction for the network. Bolling also showed a 16 percent drop from O'Reilly a week earlier, and he reached 3.11 million viewers.

He had initially planned to return to his The O'Reilly Factor show on April 24.

The pope has made compassion for migrants a hallmark of his papacy, and in a broadcast aired previous year O'Reilly said he personally wanted to convince Francis that millions of Americans had been harmed by the immigration system.
