President Trump's NYC Visit Will Bring Tight Security, Protests

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will find common ground with US President Donald Trump when they meet in NY on Thursday, Australia's foreign minister said, in a bid to soothe ties strained by a fractious phone call between the two soon after Mr Trump's inauguration.

Trump and Turnbull are set to attend an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the victory over Japan by USA and Australian forces in World War II's Battle of the Coral Sea.

Mr Trump has been critical of a deal struck with the Obama administration which would see up to 1,250 refugees to Australia resettled in the U.S. in exchange for Australia resettling refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. "We're going to make a statement about the fact that our NY values immigrants, unlike the president".

Another concern to address from the Australian side will be how the Trump administration's America-first trade policy might affect economic relations between the two countries and between the USA and Asia in general.

The leaders are expected to discuss North Korea, security and economic issues. He told Fox News in an interview last month that he has avoided NY because "it's expensive" and the security requirements of a presidential visit disrupt the country's largest city.

"The historic setting of the prime minister's meeting with President Trump is also very important", Bishop said.

There was no better illustration of the relationship than the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The prime minister is expected to have a face-to-face meeting with Mr Trump on Thursday before the Intrepid dinner.

President Trump is headed back to his hometown.

. Wesley Bush, chief executive of Northrop Grumman, the United States defence contractor, will introduce Mr Turnbull, according to the person familiar with the schedule. Some acknowledged his loneliness and longing for NY.

Turnbull would be returning to Australia on Saturday.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey considers the YPG an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has been waging an insurgency in Turkey since 1984.

"Mr Turnbull should shape the administration's still unformed Asia policy by ensuring that the USA remains constructively engaged in the region", said Alan Dupont, an analyst at the Lowy Institute. "I stand up for Australia's interests and make Australia's case as powerfully and persuasively as I can wherever I am".

"Donald thinks he owns NY, he loves the place so much", Chris Ruddy, chief executive officer of Newsmax and a long-time friend of Trump's, said in an interview.

The deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan and the fight against Isis in Iraq and Syria will also loom large on the agenda.

Air Force 1 is set to touch down in JFK in the mid afternoon. The US is likely to want Canberra to commit to supporting its efforts in training defence local forces in Iraq and fighting ISIS into the future. "You have to worry is there one wild card in there that could create a problem".

Steven Roth, co-chairman of Mr Trump's infrastructure task force, recently said the U.S. administration was looking "very carefully" at how Australia is financing its building programme through "infrastructure recycling".
