Mexico and police chief slam Texas' new 'sanctuary city' ban

The ACLU released its alert on Tuesday, days after Abbott signed Senate Bill (SB) 4, which fines police agencies and local governments that resist immigration enforcement and allows officers to investigate a person's immigration status during routine traffic stops.

SB4, as the law is known, also requires local law-enforcement officials to cooperate with federal immigration authorities who request they detain people suspected of being in the United States illegally.

But Austin City Council member Greg Casar, who is named in the lawsuit with the rest of the council, spoke out against the suit.

AG Paxton said the lawsuit asks a federal court to uphold it's new policy that bans the practice of being a sanctuary city.

Tunnel with nuclear waste collapses in Washington state
There is no indication of a release of contamination at this point, Crews are continuing to survey the area for contamination. It contains about 56 million gallons of radioactive waste, most of it in 177 underground tanks.

"[The law] is constitutional, lawful and a vital step in securing our borders", Paxton said in a statement.

"Local law enforcement agencies depend on the cooperation of immigrants, legal or not, in solving a wide array of crimes", the International Association of Chiefs of Police wrote.

ACLU representatives say they are concerned that Abbott's signing could lead to racial profiling and "illegal harassment by law enforcement" of Texas residents and visitors even before the law goes into effect.

"He says it's about law enforcement, but every major police department in the state came out against it", said the Dallas Democrat.

Abbott joined Martha MacCallum on Fox News Monday night to talk about the a new Texas bill that effectively bans sanctuary cities.

The Texas and Arizona bills are not identical. Abbott spokesman John Wittman said they chose to sign the bill on a Facebook livestream because that's "where most people are getting their news nowadays".

"MALDEF will do its level best, in court and out, to restore Texas, the state where MALDEF was founded, to its greater glory, and to help Texas to overcome 'Abbott's Folly, ' " he said in a written statement. This is a law that the legislature has reasonably passed that basically says cities, counties can not prohibit law enforcement from asking about immigration status.

It also requires officers to hold people for Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) even if they lack the authority to do so.

Freeze watch in effect overnight as unseasonably-cold temperatures stick around
Environment Canada issued a frost advisory for areas in Wellington County, the Region of Waterloo and northern Wellington County. Environment Canada issued a frost advisory for Toronto, Hamilton and the regions of Peel, Halton, York and Durham on Sunday.

Texas's law goes further than Trump's did by making it a crime - a class A misdemeanor - for sheriffs and police chiefs to fail to fully cooperate with immigration officials. If a Texas sheriff or other law enforcement authority can not lawfully honor an ICE detainer, risky people will slip through the cracks of the justice system and back into our communities.
