Military courts detain 50 Venezuela protestors

President Nicolas Maduro's administration says the courts are part of emergency measures necessary to ensure national security against what they decry as foreign-backed attempts to violently oust the socialist government from power.

A recent report released by the Health Ministry says that the number of women who died in childbirth in 2016 reached 756.

At least 39 people have died in the unrest since early April, including protesters, government sympathizers, bystanders, and security forces.

Cases of malaria rose by 76 percent to more than 240,000. Two were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, he said.

The opposition has organized weeks of protests against Maduro, accusing him of dictatorial rule and calling for elections.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Dozens of protesters have been injured in Venezuela's capital and a 27-year-old man has died in another day of violent clashes during demonstrations demanding elections.

The youths hurled stones and the so-called "poopootov cocktails" at National Guard troops who blocked their route through the center of the capital city.

Protesters' motivation was boosted at the beginning of May when Maduro announced he would call up a constituent assembly to rewrite the country's constitution. One National Police spokesman however said officers were guaranteeing demonstrators' right to protest.

Maduro has dismissed the opposition movement as a violent, far-right effort - supported, he says, by the US -intent on removing him from power.

"The right and basic guarantees of due process no longer exist in Venezuela from the moment a civilian is forced to appear before a military court", said Luis Almagro, the Uruguayan head of the OAS, in a video statement on Monday.

Also after the game, in an interview that aired on the NHL Network, Crosby was asked if he was evaluated for a concussion . After watching the replay and seeing Crosby's head smash into the boards, the questions on everybody's mind were obvious.

Maduro has the public backing of the military high command - a decisive factor in the political crisis, analysts say.

"We are using those "poopootov" bombs as we call them because they repress us with Molotov cocktails, with pellet guns and everything".

Protesters across Venezuela took to the streets on April 1 to demand the resignation of Maduro, the successor of late leader Hugo Chavez and his leftist ideology, after the country's courts tried to strengthen his regime even further.

State prosecutors requested that 14 people detained over incidents there "be judged by civil and not military courts".

"They are not military officials, so it is wrong to judge them in that jurisdiction", it said, without mentioning other cases raised by the opposition.
