Police officer who shot and killed Texas teen is fired

There was no reason for Balch Springs, Tex., officer Roy Oliver to open fire at a vehicle filled with teenagers trying to leave a party last Saturday, killing one of the passengers, and that's why he was sacked.

Oliver and the other police who arrived on the scene were responding to reports that a party last weekend was getting out of hand and had arrived to look into reports of underage drinking. A body cam Oliver was wearing reportedly showed that the vehicle was driving forward. According to Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Edwards family, Oliver is appealing his termination.

"After seeing his brother get shot", Merritt said, "Jordan's older brother was handcuffed and taken by police for no particular reason".

The terminated officer, identified as Roy Oliver, was sacked for violating several departmental policies, Haber said, but he didn't elaborate.

Both the Dallas County district attorney and the Dallas County sheriff's office are investigating the case.

It seems that she only tries to combat sexism when it's convenient and when it directly concerns her. The "Outnumbered" hosts reacted this afternoon to the "disrespectful" treatment of Conway.

Merritt said police also detained Jordan's father when he showed up at the station asking about his kids.

Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber initially said Edwards was in a auto full of five people, including his brother, who was driving away from a house party after hearing gunshots.

In a statement released Tuesday through their attorney, Lee Merritt, Jordan's family thanked Haber for making "commendable strides toward justice" and said they were "grateful the decision has been made to terminate the officer responsible for Jordan's murder".

The Dallas County medical examiner ruled Edwards' death a homicide.

Edwards' 16-year-old brother was handcuffed and held overnight in jail without charges, the family's lawyer said Tuesday; he didn't find out that his younger brother died until Sunday morning.

"That was exclusively on me in a rush to get the information out, to be transparent, because it's important for us to be transparent because we have to be responsible to our community partners", he said. Given that the vehicle in question was not even driving towards policemen when shots were fired, says Merritt, this latest killing of an unarmed black person stands out somewhat more than the others due to its "sheer recklessness". "It's just unbelievable. It's absolutely unbelievable that a department did what a department should do".

But a family statement released Tuesday night called for disciplinary action against other officers who "extended this nightmare for those children". "What we desire only second to having our beloved Jordan back is JUSTICE FOR JORDAN". 'The incident is recent and still being investigated. "Everyone should wait until the facts come out and we know more".

Jordan Edwards was a freshman at Mesquite High School.

There was no reason for the officer to use deadly force in this situation, Merritt said Sunday, adding that Edwards and the other teens in the vehicle were attempting to leave the party upon hearing gunfire. His brother drove away, but stopped and flagged down officers about a block away after he and the other boys realized Edwards had been shot. It took a few moments before the people inside in the auto noticed Edwards slumped over, she said. They couldn't tell if he was already dead. One of Jordan's brothers was driving.

A vigil was held at the school on Monday evening, and the school district said they are "mourning this bad loss". We anxiously await the officer's identification and arrest for the crime of murder.
