World braces for more cyberattacks as work week begins

A young security researcher in the United Kingdom, identified only as MalwareTech has claimed credit for stemming the initial outbreak.

In addition to the UK's NHS, the WannaCrypt ransomware also hit Spain's Telefonica telco and other companies in Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Ukraine, according to the security firm Malwarebytes.

"We are on a downward slope, the infections are extremely few, because the malware is not able to connect to the registered domain", said Vikram Thakur, principal research manager at Symantec.

After taking computers over, the virus displayed messages demanding a payment of $300 in virtual currency Bitcoin to unlock files and return them to the user.

"We have activated our major incident plan to make sure we can maintain the safety and welfare of patients", the spokesman said.

"They have been working I know through the night nearly to make sure patches are in place to make sure that hopefully the NHS services can get back to normal", he told BBC radio.

He said Russian Federation and India were hit particularly hard, largely because Microsoft's Windows XP - one of the operating systems most at risk - was still widely used there.

Stone vows to cooperate with Senate committee
But senior Democrats said he had recently asked the Justice Department for more resources for his Trump-Russia investigation. In a farewell letter to staff , Mr Comey said he would not "spend time on the decision or the way it was executed".

Microsoft took the unusual step of reissuing security patches first made available in March for Windows XP and other older versions of its operating system.

That prediction seemed to be borne out Sunday.

Although a temporary fix earlier slowed the infection rate, the attackers had now released a new version of the ransomware, he said.

Shanghai's Fudan University received reports that a large number of school computers were infected with the virus. French automaker Renault had to temporarily shut down manufacturing at plants in northern France and Romania, Reuters reported. The government is also setting up a secure data center in Subic.

She said: "This has been a global cyber-attack which has impacted on countries across the world and clearly any incident of this nature is hugely concerning - but it's important to stress there is no evidence to suggest patient data has been compromised".

The anonymous specialist, known only as MalwareTech, prevented more than 100,000 computers across the globe from being infected.

In a statement, the computing giant criticised the way governments stored up information about security flaws in computer systems - which could then be stolen, causing widespread damage.

Ransomware works by hijacking a person's files and threatening to delete them without payment. Security experts remained cautious, however, and stressed there was a continuing threat.

What we now need to understand is what those NHS organisations which were affected by the ransomware have in common, and how they differ from those which escaped unscathed.

"The numbers are still going up", Wainwright said. The average ransom request is $500, IBM found.

Symantec said the majority of organisations affected were in Europe.

As the massive ransomware attack spread like wildfire across hundreds of countries over the weekend, experts estimated that the ransomware, dubbed WannaCrypt or WannaCry, infected over 100,000 computers in almost 150 countries. The FBI says the typical ransom runs between $200 and $10,000.
