Gene Frenette: In winning The Players, Kim takes page from Tiger's book

Kim, a 21-year-old South Korean, captured his second PGA Tour victory Sunday, becoming the youngest victor in Players Championship history.

After his victory in the Wyndham Championship last year, Kim is the fourth player in the last 25 years to win twice on the PGA Tour before the age of 22, following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth.

Kim carded a final round of 69 at Sawgrass to finish 10 under par, three shots ahead of Poulter and former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

He became the second Asian victor of the Players Championship after his idol, South Korean KJ Choi, triumphed in 2011.

"It was a big shock to the system to hit one of those nasty shanks when I've hit it as good as I have all week", Poulter said. This victory comes with perks beyond the $1.89 million first prize. Along with title and money comes a five-year exemption on Tour and three-year exemption to play at the Masters.

However, the 27-year-old Englishman held his nerve to card four vital birdies in a closing 69, his third bogey-free round of the week at Morgado Golf Resort giving him a winning total of 21 under par.

South Korean Kim Si-woo has rallied to capture The Players Championship, one of the biggest tournaments on the PGA Tour. Other than Kim, Wang Jeung-hun and An Byeong-hun are listed at 57th and 58th in the world ranking as of Sunday. What's even more ironic is that to some degree, the players thought to have a reasonable chance to win on Sunday at all played like kids and the 21-year-old played like the seasoned vet.

Competing against Team United States at the Cup will be the worldwide team, comprising the top 10 global players in the official world ranking. "From the beginning of this year, I really wished I could be top 10 so I could get the ticket to get in".

Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain was never going to win, but it will be hard to forget how he finished.

But he admitted to gaining confidence as the day wore on - especially after he took the lead for good with an 18-foot birdie putt at the ninth. "I feel it is the best time for me to take precautionary measures to ensure I can play and complete fully healthy for the rest of the season". That gave the Spaniard 70 and a tie for fourth with Kyle Stanley, a co-leader after 54 holes who shot 75.

"I got close there on 11 once I made birdie, and obviously I wanted to try and put a little bit more pressure on, but it was tough to get it close [to the hole]", Poulter said.

He was given a reprieve until the end of the season and made the most of it at Sawgrass, finishing three shots behind champion Kim Si-woo to post his best finish since November 2014.

Poulter admitted afterwards that he was keen to play a number of European Tour events this summer, and he will join the likes of Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose in a star-studded field for the first of seven Rolex Series tournaments.
