Trump exaggerates a threat to religious freedom

"We are giving churches their voices back", Trump told an audience in the Rose Garden of the White House on Thursday. "I know you'll only say good", Trump said, after unveiling the order. But the Trump Administration's plan to secure religious liberty are drawing criticism from faith leaders and civil, human and reproductive rights groups.

Trump's executive order, officially called "Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty", is not a national extension of the 2015 IN law.

"We intend to file suit today", said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero in a statement released minutes after the order was made public.

According to the Associated Press, the new executive order has disappointed some of Trump's supporters who were hoping for a more sweeping measure. It allows religious organizations to be more politically active and endorse candidates without losing their tax-exempt status.

Numerous religious leaders News 5 spoke with on Thursday from local churches, Focus on the Family, the Colorado Catholic Conference and the Family Policy Alliance all say, this is a positive step in the right direction for our community.

What do you think of Trump's latest executive order? There was also a directive in Trump's religious liberty order that would enable employers to withhold contraceptives, the National Review reports that Trump's order says that "federal agencies to exempt some religious organizations from Affordable Care Act requirements that provide employees with health coverage for contraception".

"President Trump's prior assertion that he wished to "totally destroy" the Johnson Amendment with this order has proven to be a textbook case of 'fake news, '" he added.

Some conservative critics said the order fell short of fulfilling Trump's campaign vow to protect Americans' rights to religious liberty.

The Johnson Amendment, named for then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas and enacted into law in 1954, restricts tax-exempt organizations, including churches and religious organizations, from endorsing or opposing candidates for elected office.

The order "will direct the IRS to exercise maximum enforcement discretion to alleviate the burden of the Johnson amendment, which prohibits religious leaders from speaking about politics and candidates from the pulpit", the official said.

"We strongly encourage the president to see his campaign promise through to completion", Baylor said. Americans United for Separation of Church and State, meanwhile, said the order was actually a "direct attack on religious freedom".
