Canada's Justin Trudeau Asked the Pope to Apologize for Residential School Abuse

In 2008, former prime minister Stephen Harper issued an apology on behalf of Canadians, calling it "a sad chapter in our history".

Canadians want to press ahead with reconciliation in the wake of the residential school era, Justin Trudeau said Monday as he described his efforts to encourage Pope Francis to apologize for the Catholic Church's role in the tragedy.

The Pope - himself no stranger to the cause of social justice, he noted to Trudeau - seemed open to the idea, the prime minister said as he related the broad strokes of their private conversation at the Vatican.

Although the residential schools were supported by the Canadian government, Prime Minister Trudeau suggested that Pope Francis should visit the country to make an apology.

United Kingdom lowers attack threat level as police close in on bomber's network
A police officer, a police auto , and a bomb disposal unit wait outside a street in Moss Side, Manchester, Britain May 27, 2017 . There were also searches at properties in Cheetham Hill and in the Longsight area.

The commission made 94 recommendations, including that the pope issue a formal apology in Canada to survivors and their descendents for the Church's "role in the spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse" of the children. Families were often coerced by police into sending their children to these schools as part of a policy, intended, "not to educate them, but primarily to break their link to their culture and identity", according to the commission's findings.

Similar apologies have been issued by Anglican, Presbyterian and United Churches, who along with the Catholic Church helped run these schools as joint ventures with the Canadian government. "The parties then focused on the themes of integration and reconciliation".

Trudeau, who is Catholic, and the bishops of Canada agree on fighting climate change and on welcoming and assisting refugees, especially from Syria.

The bishops of Saskatchewan, Indigenous leaders and civic authorities have invited Pope Francis to visit the province in 2018 or '19 to offer an official apology.

On Monday, Trudeau said he invited the Pope to visit Canada in the coming years, and thanked him for the global leadership he has shown on climate change.

"We talked about how important it is to both highlight the scientific basis of protecting our planet with the moral and ethical obligation to lead and to build a better future for all peoples on this earth", Mr. Trudeau said. Mr. Trudeau gave the Pope a Montagnais-French dictionary and a set of books from Canada's National Jesuit Library.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who like Trudeau had been in Brussels for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders' meeting and in Sicily for the G7 summit, met the Pope for about 30 minutes last week.

The Pope gave the Prime Minister a copy of the encyclical on the environment as well as ones on family and evangelism and a gold medal marking his four years as pontiff. "So this follow with Prime Minister Trudeau today is really great news", Mr. Littlechild said.
