Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor the fallen

Hollywood, MD- Memorial Day is an American holiday to honor the men and women who died while serving the United States Military-and unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season.

But that matter was settled, as a political issue at least, in May 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Waterloo, N.Y., as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

As time continued, other wars and conflicts have followed. The local father hopes to teach his young son the important difference this year at the National Cemetery.

"It's all those that want to help us support our fallen members", Johnson said.

LeBron James breaks Michael Jordan's playoff scoring record
With a three-pointer in the third quarter James, 32, took his total of playoff points to 5,989 - two more than Jordan's 5,987. In the series against the Celtics , James averaged 29.6 points per game, 6.8 assists per game, and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Memorial Day began as Decoration Day. The date of Decoration Day was originally the 30th of May.

The holiday arose after the Civil War.

"A lot of people probably didn't even know this cemetery was here, and this was the first opportunity for them to see it when they saw we were having a Memorial Day celebration", said Foster.

But the holiday has lost its way; the day's original intent too often is obscured now, confused, or forgotten, as Memorial Day advocates have argued at the website and elsewhere. In Texas, Confederate Heroes Day was established in 1931 and still falls on January 19 every year.

Douglas County has hundreds of war dead to honor this holiday weekend, according to a list compiled by the Lawrence Journal-World.

Memorial Day was not a legal holiday until President Lyndon B. signed legislation in 1966, but the tradition of honoring our war dead was already almost a century old by then. Memorial Day, the day set aside to reflect on the death of our loved ones and honor those who have sacrificed their lives in the service to their country, should always be a day of solemn reverence. The law took effect in 1971 at the federal level.

Once known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance when Americans pay tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our country and the freedoms that we enjoy despite unrest around the globe.

The Department of Veterans Affairs says, "By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation". Inouye died in 2012.

Soldiers try to restore order in besieged Philippine city
The government says Hapilon is a point man for Islamic State in the Philippines and has been collaborating with the Maute leaders. He said he had spent the last few nights "praying that the bullets will not find their way to my house and hit us".

There are ceremonies at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier on both Veterans Day and Memorial Day. The town first celebrated on May 5, 1866. Dozens of small American flags will dot the gravestones of the fallen military, that part of the program arranged by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The largest parades are in Chicago, New York and Washington, DC.
