M scholar thrashed for taking part in beef festival

Chennai: A research scholar of IIT-Madras was brutally attacked on Tuesday by a group of students inside the campus on Tuesday allegedly for taking part in the beef festival.

Police said the victim, who was identified as R Sooraj, a PhD scholar in IIT-M, suffered an injury in his eyes.

Activists of opposition parties, mainly the CPM and the Congress, have been organizing beef fests to protest the new rules issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests recently. It is only to regulate the animal market and the sale of cattle in these markets, and ensuring welfare of cattle dealt in market.
