Man charged in disappearance of U of I visiting scholar

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois- An Illinois man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a University of Illinois graduate student, last seen June 9th.

Zhang graduated from Beijing's Peking University in 2016 with a master's degree in environmental engineering, and had a year-long position at the University of IL department of natural resources and environmental sciences.

"Once my daughter is found, I will never let her visit the USA again", Yingying's father, Zhang Ronggao was quoted by the Beijing Youth Daily as saying.

When FBI agents first talked to Christensen, who owns one of the 18 four-door Saturn Astra cars registered in Champaign County, he said he was either sleeping or playing video games at home when Zhang went missing.

According to the federal charging document, Zhang meant to meet with an apartment manager to sign a lease at a complex in Urbana the afternoon of June 9.

She was last seen three weeks ago getting into a vehicle. Law enforcement agents believe she is no longer alive. Some of its sub threads include "abduction fantasy" and "planning a kidnapping".

An Illinois man will remain in custody pending his initial federal court appearance on a charge alleging he kidnapped a visiting University of Illinois scholar from China who authorities believe to be dead. Meldgin said he noticed that Christensen was a quiet person in meetings, but always helped students who needed the help. Professor Cooper said he'd received no indication of anything unusual.

Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones said in a statement that the campus community is saddened Zhang is believed dead.

She had been doing research on crop photosynthesis, which included using drones to study fields, the university's communications office has said.

Her family is not yet commenting on these new findings.

When the investigators later were pouring over the CCTV footage, they tried to determine how closely the vehicle in the footage matched the one owned by Christensen.

Christensen said the woman panicked after he apparently made a wrong turn and he let her out in a residential area. He told an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent he dropped her off a few blocks away after she panicked.

When investigators saw the black Saturn Astra belonging to Christensen in the parking lot of an apartment complex on June 12, they began to focus their investigation on him. They got a break in the case on Thursday, June 29, when they heard Christensen say on an audio recording that he had taken Zhang to his apartment, where he said he had "held her against her will".

Family members described Ms. Zhang as a self-sufficient, hard-working and studious young woman committed to her family back in Nanping in southeastern China.

Ms. Zhang received her master's degree in environmental engineering past year from Peking University.
