Qatar given 48 hours to respond to Saudi led coalition demands

The extension came after a request by the Emir of Kuwait, who is acting as a mediator, and after a prior 10-day extension.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said that the 13 demands from Saudi Arabia and several of its allies were created to be spurned.

Among the demands were calls to end financial support for terrorism, shutter the Al-Jazeera network, cut most ties with Iran, and close Turkey's air base as the price of ending a regional boycott of the small Persian Gulf state.

"Qatar has chosen to be an ally of Iran and for the past 20 years it has been continuing its support for terrorist groups with its knowledge of their plots against the countries of the region", the Saudi ambassador said.

Doha has rejected the demands and said it will not be meeting them, and it is unclear what will happen if the additional deadline passes on Tuesday.

"There is no fear".

Mr Trump spoke to King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, as well as Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim. Qatar denies the allegations.

In a statement on Sunday, the White House reiterated that "the overriding objective of [Mr Trump's] initiative is the cessation of funding for terrorism".

The group behind the demands is made up of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The extension of the deadline comes shortly after three Gulf leaders had separate conversations with US President Donald Trump on handling the situation.

Qatar's foreign minister has arrived in Kuwait with a handwritten response to demands by four Arab nations.

Hurayji, in an interview with the Arabic version of Turkey's Daily Sabah, said that Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt chose to severe ties with Qatar after Doha's reluctance to meet commitment it made over several years.

Here is a recap of events since Saudi Arabia and several allies broke ties with Qatar, accusing it of backing extremists. No reason was given for the abrupt cancellation but sources in Riyadh say the diplomatic standoff with Qatar is one of the reasons for the cancellation.

Saudi Arabia and its allies said early Monday they had made a decision to extend by 48 hours the deadline for Qatar to accept their list of demands to lift a de facto blockade.
