Takata recalls another 2.7M airbags

Honda Motor Co said Monday it had confirmed an 11th U.S. death involving one of its vehicles tied to a faulty Takata Corp air bag inflator.

Honda is again urging consumers who own a recalled vehicles to contact the company and get a replacement immediately.

All told, 12 people in the USA and 17 worldwide have been killed by the defective inflators. USA supplier Key Safety Systems is set to purchase almost all of the company's global assets for $1.59 billion, which is still far short of what the company will ultimately face when all is said and done.

The company did not release the name of the man out of respect for his family, but confirmed that he was not the car's owner and he was working on the vehicle at a private residence. The automaker said police photos show that the metal inflator ruptured and shot out fragments.

A year after the fact, another death has been attributed to the explosion of a defective Takata air bag. The OEM noted that 12 recall notices were sent since 2009 to the Accord's registered owners. The airbag had deployed and "the rupture most likely contributed to his death", says a Honda rep.

The 2001 Accord reportedly includes one of the more hazardous versions of Takata driver's side airbag inflators, with laboratory testing showing they have up to a 50 per cent chance of rupturing during an accident.

According to The Detroit News, a man was performing an unknown fix inside a 2001 Honda Accord past year when the airbag deployed. The airbag inflator ruptured after it deployed.

The 2001 Accord has one of the most risky types of Takata driver's side air bag inflators.

Takata has recalled, or expects to recall, by 2019 about 125 million vehicles worldwide, including more than 60 million in the US.

The NHTSA said 2001-2003 model Honda and Acura vehicles have as high as a 50 per cent chance of a unsafe air bag inflator rupture in a crash.

Everton continue to play hard ball with Man United over Lukaku fee
It had been expected that Lukaku would return to Chelsea , given their long-standing interest in the Belgian striker. His signing would be an important step in United's quest to return to the top of the Premier League .

While the incident doesn't seem to have occurred in a professional fix setting, it should be a stark reminder for all shops: Follow OEM guidelines not just to protect the vehicle owner, but the technician as well.

Of the deaths linked to Takata's inflators, 16 took place in Honda vehicles since May 2009, including five in Malaysia using a different type of Takata inflator, while one death occurred in a Ford Motor Co vehicle in SC in December 2015.

Last month, Takata filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy listing liabilities of over 10-billion dollars.

"On average, more than 500 recalled Honda and Acura vehicles are receiving estimates and triggering notifications through this system every day", Honda wrote.
