King Salman reportedly pressured Israel to reopen Al Aqsa mosque

Following a shooting attack near the Temple Mount on Friday that left two police officers dead, Israel closed the site, which is holy for Jews and Muslims.

The statement is a response to calls by Wakf leaders at the holy site for Palestinians to refuse to pass through the detectors on their way to pray at the Al-Aqsa mosque.

Palestinians subsequently rioted in Jerusalem, clashing with Israeli security forces near the Old City's Lion's Gate entrance.

Muslims, however, refused to enter the site in protest at the newly-imposed security measures, including metal detectors and cameras.

Zach Damond, 22, said she was engaged to marry his father Don Damond in August, although she had already taken his name. The Star Tribune reports that police responded to reports of a possible assault about 11.30pm on Saturday, local time .

On Friday, a deadly attack occurred on the outskirts of the holy site, where three Palestinian gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen who were in turn, killed by security forces.

The militant called on the Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem to unite and defend Jerusalem by all their means, adding "the enemy (Israel) must know that the price of attacking Al-Aqsa will be very high". But police said that despite the tensions, hundreds of worshippers had entered the compound.

Meanwhile, two rights groups protested against the closure of the Old City and its vicinity in Jerusalem al-Quds and the ban on Palestinians from entering it. The police said they plan to gradually open additional gates, after installing metal detectors.

The site reopened on Sunday, but with metal detectors at entrances.

The area is home to the Western Wall - which was part of the walls around the Second Jewish Temple and is one of the holiest places for Jews to pray - and the Dome of the Rock, where Muslims believe the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven.

Abdullah condemned the attack, but also called on Netanyahu to reopen the Al Aqsa compound and stressed the need to "avoid any escalation at the site". 'I assume that with time they will understand that this is not bad, ' he told Army Radio.

Israel's emergency medical service, Magen David Adom, said two soldiers in their 20s were injured in the purported attack, whom were transferred to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem al-Quds for treatment.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed that the Palestinian had died. He said that security measures of this kind are commonplace in the world.
