Germany opts for hardline stance against Turkey

A Social Democrat, Gabriel made clear he was speaking for the coalition government led by conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her spokesman soon tweeted that the steps were indeed "necessary and indispensable".

The immediate trigger of Germany's ire was a Turkish court's decision Tuesday to jail Steudtner and the other activists, including Amnesty International's Turkey director and a Swedish IT trainer, who were detained in a July 5 police raid on a hotel on the island of Buyukada, where they were attending a digital security workshop.

Earlier, Gabriel cast doubt on Turkey's aspirations to join the EU. It added that the relations between the two countries should be conducted based on global norms and principles not by blackmail and threats, urging Germany to understand Turkey's expectations in the fight against terror and security and evaluate the common interests with a strategic vision.

Cavusoglu called Germany's stance "unacceptable". Germany is "harboring various groups of terrorists who have been targeting our country and preventing their trial before justice", the ministry said, in a reference to supporters of the Gulen movement whom Erdogan accuses of orchestrating a failed coup attempt a year ago.

Gabriel, the German foreign minister, broke off his holiday to deal with the crisis.

The top German diplomat said that Turkey, having long seen itself as "a member of the European family", had leveled Nazi jibes at Germany.

The move prompted Germany to summon the Turkish ambassador to Berlin and raise the possibility of suspending aid sent to Turkey.

Some 150,000 people have been sacked or suspended from jobs in the civil service, military and private sector and roughly 50,000 people have been detained since the coup.

Despite repeated requests by Ankara to arrest suspects in last July's defeated coup attempt in Turkey, German authorities have turned down extradition requests. Moreover, one "can't advise anyone to invest in a country when there is no legal certainty and where companies, completely respectable companies, are presented as terrorists, " Gabriel said.

"We need our policies towards Turkey to go in a new direction. we can't continue as we have done until now".

But India agrees with Bhutan's claim to the region, which the Chinese call Donglang but is called the Doklam plateau by Bhutan. O'Brien, while speaking to the media, said the government didn't give the Opposition the answers it was looking for.

Gabriel stressed that Germany still wanted to rebuild relations with its long-time ally but that first Erdogan's government must "return to European values".

"The Turkish government needs to immediately and directly hear the German government's outrage and incomprehension as well as its crystal-clear expectations in the case of Peter Steudtner, and this time without diplomatic niceties", foreign ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said.

With an eye to Turkey's lucrative tourism industry, Schaefer said the foreign ministry was stopping short of issuing a travel warning for Turkey. "It is unthinkable for us to endanger the lives of any country's soldiers, and we expect the same from other countries", Kalin said. Germany is Turkey's largest trading partner, while ethnic Turks make up Germany's largest minority.

German-Turkish relations have steadily deteriorated in recent years, amid a free speech dispute centred on a German TV comedian and a German parliamentary vote on the sensitive historical question of the Armenian genocide. "They need to sit down and think of how they can rescue themselves from this brain fade". So far this year, bookings from Germany have accounted for about 10 percent of Turkey's tourists.
