Regular alcohol consumption could cut diabetes risk, study finds

Polyphenols play a role in helping to manage blood sugar.

The study found that the lowest risk of diabetes was observed at 14 drinks per week in men and at nine drinks per week in women, relative to no alcohol intake.

In the past studies have suggested that light to moderate drinking can reduce the risk of developing diabetes but no research has ever explored the frequency of alcohol consumption.

That led scientists to conclude "consumption of alcohol on three to four days weekly was associated with significantly lower [diabetes] risk in men and women" compared to those who drink one or fewer days a week.

Studies in the past have shown that there is a correlation between moderate alcohol consumption and reducing the risk of diabetes.

AstraZeneca shares take historic tumble on failed lung cancer study
Despite income from several disposals and external deals, revenues slipped 9% (at constant exchange rates) to US$10.46bn. Given that the focus around AstraZeneca is on its pipeline, the first half results played second fiddle this morning.

Health experts surveyed and said the caution over the findings. "Regularly drinking more than this can increase the risk to your health". Participants were also asked about their frequency of binge drinking (at least five beverages in one occasion), which was reported as never, less than 1 day per week, 1 day per week or more than 1 day per week.

It seems barely a day goes by without conflicting reports telling us that drinking is bad for us - or no, actually some drinking is OK.

The researchers also looked at the amount of alcohol consumed.

They began by gathering data from Danish citizens 18 years old or older who completed the Danish Health Examination Survey. Information on incident cases of diabetes was obtained from the Danish National Diabetes Register. The researchers took into account age, sex, level of education, body mass index, smoking status, diet - whether or not participants ate fiber-rich bread or grain, vegetables, salad, and fruit and fish - leisure time activity, current or previous hypertension and family history of diabetes. "However, I do not advise patients to start drinking just to reduce risk of developing diabetes".

There was no connection between binge drinking and diabetes.

She also collaborated with Marla Frazee on a picture book version of It Takes A Village . So it is unclear what Clinton's book will bring that is new.

Next to wine, beer also had a positive effect on lowering diabetes risk.

Drinker between one and six beers per week reduced diabetes risk by 21% in men but had no effect on women. A very long follow-up, for instance, 10 years, would result in drinking and other habits changing and this could "cause more "noise" in results", said Tolstrup. Seven or more drinks of liquor each week was associated with an 83% increased risk of diabetes for women, when compared to women drinking less than one drink of spirits.

Modest drinking helps protect against developing diabetes, according to a new study.

While the study suggests a link between alcohol and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, the study can not determine that alcohol causes these protective effects. Here, the benefits of alcohol were seen regardless of whether someone was overweight or not. But the researchers did not distinguish between type 1 diabetes and the more common type 2.
