Meet the next two prime ministers of Pakistan

Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has named his younger brother Shahbaz to replace him as the country's leader, after having been removed from office by the Supreme Court a day earlier for lying on a wealth declaration.

Shahbaz Sharif, who has been a major player in Pakistani politics since the 1980s, likely will win election and the ruling party will install him as prime minister until the next general election in April.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Pakistan's petroleum minister and a loyalist of the Sharif administration, has now assumed office as interim prime minister [WP report].

Mr Sharif said he tried his best to put Pakistan on the path of progress but was unfairly penalised with his disqualification.

Considered highly intelligent and a long-time loyalist of Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister who was ousted by the Supreme Court on Friday, the 58-year-old Abbasi will act as a placeholder for the Sharif dynasty. "His departure would have an adverse effect on Pakistan's foreign relations", said Farooqi.

Sharif was expelled from his post as leader for a third time this week, a record for the country which has never had a prime minster fulfil a five-year term.

A quick handover could ease political upheaval sparked by the supreme court's decision on Friday to disqualify Mr Sharif for not declaring a source of income.

Although political watchers expect political crisis and tensions between the PML-N and the opposition parties, Nawaz Sharif adopted a soft and reconciliation tone when he spoke to reporters after he presided over a meeting to choose his successor.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to be appointed as the interim prime minister.

The ouster of Nawaz was politically controversial, with opposition figures celebrating publicly in the capital city of Islamabad, handing out candy in the streets. At the same time we laud the executive's respect for the judiciary in accepting the verdict of the court and avoiding a potentially politically destabilising situation had Sharif chosen not to accept the ruling.

"Instead, the one that now holds sway in the application of disqualification criteria for elected officials is staggeringly wide and could become the source of chaos in the parliamentary realm", it said.

The election commission of Pakistan (ECP) is expected to announce schedule for holding NA-120 by-polls by next week after the premier's resignation.

Sharif was later sentenced to an additional 14 years in prison on corruption charges, but he was released after six months when Saudi Arabia brokered a deal to allow him to go into exile there. She was defeated by Sharif in the 2013 general election.
