Former BC premier Christy Clark says she intends to resign

Christy Clark's reign as leader of the BC Liberal Party is set to come to an end next week. She won the B.C. Liberal leadership in 2011 and became the first woman in the province to lead a party to victory two years later.

"I knew she was struggling with what she wanted to do", Coleman said. "I wish her and her family the very best".

"I'm excited to see the renewed engagement that will strengthen and energize our party as we choose the next leader", Clark said in an email. "She has done an incredible job", said Ashton.

"Your life changes pretty dramatically".

"Unfortunately with the result of the last election and the B.C. Liberals are in opposition and I don't think there's the prospect of an election in B.C. any time soon".

Such a prospect has unnerved investors in Canada's third-most populous province, not least owners of oil and gas projects such as Kinder Morgan Inc's C$7.4 billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which the New Democratic Party (NDP) has vowed to halt.

Political scientist Hamish Telford said he was surprised by the timing of Clark's resignation. "They have to do a budget quickly in September, then in the spring".

Soglin, who is mulling a run for governor, warned that the city would not get into a "race to the bottom" in incentives. No offers have yet been made by the Taiwanese company and there are no guarantees any will be.

According to them, a by-election to fill Clark's seat in the legislature could cost about half a million dollars. The Greens and the NDP signed a confidence and supply agreement and the Liberals were defeated in a non-confidence vote.

"There's no desire to run for leader", said Greg Kyllo, Shuswap MLA.

"[He] said: 'Well, if I can't be premier, I'm not going to be anything'".

In addition to resigning her party leadership, Clark also gave up her seat in Kelowna-West. She can make a lot more money in the private sector, Telford predicted.

"I think all of these things confronted her and she decided it would be to announce early, rather than hang on".

He said Elections BC is already putting the gears in motion.

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad says losing Clark comes as sad news.

Former Premier Christy Clark, pictured here on a visit to Oliver with MLA Linda Larson, announced Friday that she is stepping down as the B.C. Liberal Leader effective August 4.

"Without a doubt she has made history for British Columbia", said Larson.

I love our party and our province with all my heart - and it's been the honour of a lifetime to serve as leader and premier. This experience illustrated what we can achieve when members of this house work together.

The liberals have to set a date for a leadership vote within the next month.

"We're going to be ready".

She thanked her supporters, saying the party will need them in the coming months and years.

"Having said that, our caucus has to move forward", Coleman continued. "I don't plan on stepping down".

Eurozone economy gains steam with lowest unemployment in decade
The Eurozone economy expanded at a faster pace in the second quarter, preliminary flash estimate from Eurostat showed Tuesday. Across the European Union as a whole, including Britain, unemployment fell to its lowest since December 2008, at 7.7 per cent.

Larson praises Clark's personal role in uniting the B.C. Liberal Caucus. Penticton MLA Dan Ashton is to his immediate left.
