Barcelona suing Neymar for $10m signing bonus

"Paris Saint-Germain was surprised to learn of FC Barcelona's statement today announcing the start of legal proceedings in Spain against its former player Neymar Jr and indicating that should Neymar Jr fail to pay the monies claimed by his former club, Paris Saint-Germain will be held responsible to pay the outstanding sum", PSG's statement read.

In the days after he signed for the French club, Barcelona refused to pay the reported €26 million ($NZ42 million) instalment of the loyalty bonus which he was due to receive this summer, citing breach of contract.

Barcelona is also demanding 8.5 million Euros in damages as well as an additional 10 percent for the delayed payment.

Neymar recently made his PSG debut in Ligue 1 match against Guingamp and has settled into life in France well, already contributing three goals and three assists in just two league games.

But the Catalans are now seeking to reclaim this bonus after the "unilateral termination of the contract" which enabled Neymar to swap Barcelona for Paris.

Neymar, who left Barcelona to join the French side, drew PSG level after Max Gradel had put Toulouse ahead with a volley in the 18th minute.

The news comes hot on the heels of Neymar's criticism of the current Barcelona board, who are also not proving to be too popular with the club's fans, following Neymar's departure and the struggle to adequately replace him. "The Club also requests Paris Saint-Germain take on responsibility for the payment of these fees if the player can not do so himself". However, less than a year later the player made a decision to leave Barcelona by paying his release clause to move to the Ligue 1 side.

The lawsuit according to the club was submitted on 11 August to the Labour Tribunal in Barcelona.

Neymar said he was so sad with Barcelona's officials, after four great years at the club. But with them [the board], no. "At the start, I was happy. Barca deserve much better".
