CRN Urges Caution When Interpreting New Study on B Vitamins

"We urge consumers to resist the temptation to allow sensational headlines from this new study to alter their use of B vitamins, especially without further understanding of the nature of this study and a conversation with their health care practitioners", Duffy MacKay, senior vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs, said in a statement.

Lead researcher Dr Theodore Brasky, from Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Centre, said: "Our data shows that taking high doses of B6 and B12 over a very long period of time could contribute to lung cancer incidence rates in male smokers".

Most men have no reason to worry, however. However, the risk was found only among men, not women.

It's also possible that this action from the B vitamins simply hastens the development of an underlying lung tumor already caused by smoking, Brasky says.

Compared with non-users, male smokers taking 55 microgram daily supplements of vitamin B12 for 10 years were four times more likely to develop the disease, a study found.

Sony blocks yet another game from cross-console play with Xbox One
The response to the console has been "overwhelming", with stock at several top retailers selling out right away in many countries. That excuse doesn't really fly with Ark , though, which is a T-rated game with an older fan base.

Current smokers who reported 10-year use of vitamin B12 at doses greater than 55 µg per day appeared almost four times as likely to develop lung cancer as nonusers (HR = 3.71; 95% CI, 1.77-7.74).

For the study, epidemiologists Theodore Brasky (The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbia) and colleagues analysed data from the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) cohort study, which was created to assess the use of vitamin and mineral supplements in relation to cancer risk.

There were too few cases of lung cancer among never-smokers to crunch numbers to see if supplement use was linked to increased risk for them, too.

"If you look at B-vitamin supplement bottles. they are anywhere between 50-fold the United States recommended dietary allowance (to) upward of 2,100-fold", Brasky said.

The participants (aged 50 to 76), who were recruited between 2000 and 2002, provided information on their use of vitamin B over the previous ten years, including details about dosage.

DeMaurice Smith Accuses Roger Goodell Of Lying About Collaboration
That could change, however, when the next collective bargaining agreement comes up after the 2020 season. As it stands today, Goodell's current contract is set to expire in 2019.

Over recent years, a number of studies have looked for links between lung cancer and B vitamins.

The high-dose energy drinks are not quite as concerning as supplements, since you likely would not drink those every day for years the way the men in the study had taken supplements. "I think that the door remains open on that".

Why B vitamins influence cancer risk is not known for sure, but some believe that it is related to how B vitamins interact with the so-called one-carbon-metabolism pathway. Vitamins B-6 and B-12 may just "hasten or increase the likelihood of lung carcinogenesis among male smokers".

"Nonetheless, half of the US adult population uses one or more dietary supplements", Brasky and colleagues wrote.
