Google Home now lets you shop at Walmart using your voice

Google and Walmart have teamed up in a deal that will enable consumers to shop online using voice recognition software.

From late September, hundreds of thousands of Walmart products will become available through the Google Express shopping service.

Like Amazon shoppers who use Alexa, Walmart shoppers who link their accounts to Google will be handing over data on their shopping habits, making it easier for Google Assistant to anticipate what you're trying to buy based on past purchases.

Telling a Google Assistant to "add paper towels" to your cart, for instance, will add your most-frequently purchased size and brand of paper towels.

Google also will offer free delivery if the order meets the store's minimum order requirement. Still, Google Express is handy for a lot of people and this new partnership with Walmart should improve that user experience even more.

Walmart's customers will soon be able to buy products online through voice command. Expansion plans for 2018 include tying in Walmart's 4,700 USA stores, enabling voice-directed grocery orders and giving customers the option of store pickup at a discount. Describing the coming launch as an "exciting partnership", Google said it's expanding its Express service to include Walmart based on user feedback. You can complete the entire transaction with your voice, through picking delivery options to paying with your saved card details. Unlike Amazon, you will be able to purchase your products with its Online retailers and pickup through the official Walmart stores as well.

Amazon already has a similar service where customers can order products from its large inventory through its Alexa virtual assistant. "An open and transparent shopping universe is good for customers", Walmart's president and CEO of the USA e-commerce business said on the company's blog.

The Google partnership follows a number of technology investments Walmart has made recently: On Tuesday, the company announced a major blockchain collaboration with IBM and a number of other leading food suppliers to better track contaminated food and prevent it from reaching consumers. Google made one other announcement related to all this. The idea is that busy shoppers will happily allow artificial intelligence to sort out their shopping carts for them.
