China's Xi slams unwillingness to combat climate change

During an hour-long meeting on the fringes of the BRICS summit in Xiamen, PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping chose to "shelve differences" and "make more efforts to enhance mutual trust".

Describing these countries as "close and valued" partners of India, Mr Modi said he was pleased to exchange perspectives with them on the shared priority of achieving comprehensive sustainable development and thanked President Xi Jinping for bringing the countries together.

In an address at the plenary session of the BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) Summit here, Modi said a separate rating agency would help the economies of the member countries as well as other developing nations.

South Korea's Moon orders maximum retaliatory measures over North Korea
South Korean President Moon Jae-In has previously urged limits on Seoul's missiles to be loosened in a conversation with Trump. In 2012, the revision allowed Seoul to increase the maximum allowable missile range to 800km from the previous limit of 300km.

"We want to bury the ghost of the D-word (Doklam) in our engagement in the future", an official source who did not wish to be named said. Chinese President Xi Jinping said downward risks and uncertainties for the global economy are on the rise, and pledged to boost the power of emerging markets on the world stage.

Even before this, however, relations between the two sides had cooled somewhat over what is seen by India as China's expansion of influence in its backyard through Mr Xi's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that involves India's rival, Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka and Nepal. "It was not a backward looking, but a forward-looking conversation", Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar told the pool of Indian media here after the big meeting.

However, 63 years after the Panchsheel Treaty was signed advocating the principles of territorial integrity and peaceful coexistence, Jinping's assertion that the two countries must seek guidance from it seems a bit rich given recurring transgressions by the Chinese troops into Indian territories and particularly along the McMahon Line, which China has, since Enlai's regime, considered to be illegal. "From here India and China has to look forward", indicated one of the persons quoted above but did not wish to be identified. The meeting came barely days after the resolution of the Doklam stand-off which finally witnessed simultaneous disengagement of troops on the border after tense eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation for almost two and a half months.

Volkswagen offers scrappage discounts on polluting diesel vehicles
According to commentators though, VW's United Kingdom scheme fell short of the terms offered to drivers in its home market. Two years ago, it was revealed that Volkswagen had cheated emissions tests that affected 11 million vehicles worldwide.

China also once again urged India to align economic policies and cooperation in areas of trade and investment.

"We, in this regard, express concern on the security situation in the region and violence caused by the Taliban, [Islamic State]., Al-Qaeda and its affiliates including Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e Taiba, Jaish-e Mohammad, TTP and Hizb ut-Tahrir".

Pakistan on Tuesday rejected a statement by Brics that terror groups based on its soil such as JeM and LeT pose a threat to regional security, with defence minister Khurram Dastagir Khan saying the country does not provide safe haven to such organisations.

Seahawks acquire DE Richardson from Jets
Kearse was a polarizing figure among fans but one of the most consistent wide receivers during Pete Carroll's tenure in Seattle. While the 27-year-old Kearse is not a true number one receiver, he will now be the best player the Jets have at the position.
