Indian PM says shares Myanmar's concerns over Rakhine violence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Myanmar, said India shares Myanmar's concerns about extremist violence in Rakhine state and violence against security forces.

Naming Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rabindranath Tagore and Bahadur Shah Zafar, he said Myanmar had become the "second home" for those who had to leave their own homes during the freedom struggle.

The first such MoU between the two neighbours assumes significance for the northeastern region of the country.

Asserting that India's relationship with Myanmar has always had a very long development cooperation component; High Commissioner Misri said both countries will review all projects that India is working on.

The heads of the Senate and National Assembly standing committees for human rights have demanded that the PM rescind a presidential medal given to Aung San Suu Kyi - the head of Myanmar's ruling party and the de facto leader of the country - due to her failure to control or even condemn the genocide in her country. "We are partners in your concerns, over the loss of lives of security forces and innocent people due to the extremist violence in Rakhine State", PM Modi said.

India also faces the problem of Rohingyas fleeing into the states bordering Myanmar.

But a referendum in defiance of Spain's rule of law, without the blessing of central authorities, has inflamed controversy. The bill was submitted to the parliament outside of its normal schedule which prompted criticism from opposition parties.

Underlining the importance of maritime security, the Prime Minister said, "Myanmar and India, being neighbours, our outlook and focus on security are similar".

- India and Myanmar also signed agreements on cooperation between Myanmar Press Council and Press Council of India, extension of agreement on the establishment of India-Myanmar Centre for Enhancement of IT skill.
