Police shoot, kill tiger running loose in neighborhood

Officials say the owners of a tiger shot and killed early Wednesday after being spotted on Interstate 75 have been identified.

The tiger somehow got loose when the truck hauling 14 big cats stopped to feed them at the south of Atlanta, it added. Once they had visual confirmation, the police called animal experts to help them sedate and move the tiger. "It was a tiger on the far side, closest to my house", she said.

Speck said her small dog, who was in her backyard, was barking hysterically.

Brittney Speck, the owner of the dog attacked by the tiger, told the Journal-Constitution she was woken up by flashing police lights and the sound of her dog "going insane in the backyard". "I know some people are angry that the animal was shot, they don't understand why".

Mr Smith said the Department of Natural Resources and Animal Control were en route when the tiger began chasing a dog.

She said she called 911 and shortly afterward, the tiger jumped into her yard and on to her Dachshund, Journey.

"Wild animals belong in the wild", PETA spokeswoman Brittany Peet said in a news release, "and when risky apex predators are confined to private homes or for entertainment, the consequences can be fatal".

From her backyard, Speck said she could see the tiger in her neighbor's backyard, roaming around a minivan. Soon, the tiger jumped on her dog. The dog was returned to its owner and the owner told an NBC affiliate, the dog was OK.

Journey suffered a few scratches and will be okay.

Gerri Yoder, Henry County's animal control director said: 'No idea where she (the tiger) belonged. "This is a sad day". Authorities are trying to locate the dead tiger's owners. Officials found the tiger was missing when the truck arrived at its destination. Feld Entertainment said it was cooperating with authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and possible charges are pending.
