IS attack on Sinai convoy 'kills 18 Egyptian police'

Islamic State jihadists ambushed a police convoy, killing 18 officers and wounding seven others in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Monday. The gunmen later opened fire with machine guns and commandeered a police pickup truck.

Police found in the two apartments bomb-making materials, assault rifles and ammunition as well as maps of vital state installations and computers in which instructions and details of future attacks were stored, they said. The wounded included a police brigadier general.

Investigators had received information about militants travelling from northern Sinai to the capital to prepare for attacks on neighbouring provinces, it added. The interior ministry confirmed an attack around the town of Bir al-Abed had caused deaths and injuries but did not provide a toll. It did not provide any casualty figures. That was the deadliest attacks in two years.

Today's attack came a day after Egyptian security forces killed 10 terrorists during a raid at their hideouts in a densely populated central Cairo neighbourhood. Police said the militants had sneaked into Cairo from the volatile northern Sinai. The security forces have arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
