Politicians react to Stockley verdict

Stockley testified that he saw what he believed was a gun, and his partner yelled "gun!" as Smith backed into the police SUV twice to get away.

In July, Judge Wilson granted Jason Stockley's request for waiver of a jury trial.

Smith's killing has become a part of the national conversation around race and policing.

Jason Stockley, 36, and his partner chased the 24-year-old Smith after a suspected drug deal in the Walnut Park West neighborhood, near the city's border with Jennings. The then-officer shot at Smith's vehicle during the chase, apparently screaming, "I'm going to kill this motherfucker, don't you know it!"

During the shooting, Stockley was also in possession of a department-issued AK-47 - which he was not authorized to use. After crashing into the auto, he then shot at Smith five times, according to the documents. Stockley argues that the shooting occurred in self-defense as he claims a struggle ensued resulting in the death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Spain Ratchets Up Police Action to Prevent Catalonia Vote
This new system will allow the Spanish state to "replace the region for the majority of essential spending", he added. The letter accused the Spanish state of "an unprecedented repression offensive".

In his ruling, Judge Timothy Wilson said state prosecutors had "failed" to prove the case against the officer, Jason Stockley, who had been facing a first-degree murder charge for killing Anthony Lamar Smith, 24, inside his auto after a chase.

During the trial's opening statements, Assistant Circuit Attorney Aaron Levinson told the court that Smith didn't deserve to be killed, even if he did break the law. In the internal report, Stockley said he ordered Smith to show his hands, and believed the suspect was reaching for a handgun between the center console and the passenger seat. "He may have fled from police, but he did not deserve to be executed".

During the trial that began on August 1, prosecutors said that the actions of Stockley's partner, Officer Bianchi, "were in stark contradiction to Stockley's own words and claims of self-defense".

Stockley, who is white, was accused of planting a gun in Smith's vehicle after shooting the man five times at close range. There was also testimony from police and witnesses.

"Of course, I'm disappointed with the court's decision", Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner said in the release, adding: "I remain committed to holding people accountable for violating the law, regardless of their race, gender, occupation, or station in life".

Facebook let advertisers target users via antisemitic terms like 'Jew hater'

It is important for all members of our community to know that they are respected, valued, safe and a vital part of creating a positive culture on our campus. And once again, St. Louis will be left confused, betrayed, shellshocked and more than likely enraged.

Following the judge's ruling, people gathered outside of the courthouse to protest. Activists vowed mass disruption like the sort seen during the Ferguson, Missouri, protests if Stockley wasn't handed a guilty verdict.

"It's going to look a lot like Ferguson". At one point, Stockley is heard shouting "going to kill this motherf*cker" in clips obtained by the St. Louis-Post Dispatch.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson is calling for peace following a not guilty verdict in the trial of former St. Louis Police Officer Jason Stockley.
