Attorney: Tests show Aaron Hernandez had CTE

He was serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of his friend, semipro football player Odin Lloyd.

The researchers who examined Hernandez's brain did not make a direct link between his violent behavior and his disease, according to The New York Times. Belichick was asked Friday morning what steps he takes to inform his players of the dangers of CTE when they join the team. If the Hernandez family joins the settlement, arguing that he was no longer playing as of 2013 when he was imprisoned, they give up their right to sue the league, Sohn said, without any guarantee of getting money from the settlement. In recent years, research has uncovered evidence of a connection between CTE and certain contact sports, most notably professional football.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of the former New England Patriots star's daughter. Brain scans after his death show Hernandez had a "severe case" of the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE - often caused by repeated blows to the head. Hernandez' background included other aggressive behavior and drug use.

These hits can cause the brain to ricochet inside the skull, damaging nerve cells. Hernandez's diagnosis did not come until after his death because the disease can only be diagnosed during an autopsy.

But with the post-mortem medical announcement, Baez has apparently found a promising way to turn Hernandez into a sympathetic figure by redirecting the blame to the NFL. But because Hernandez's brain scan showed that he had damage that was usually seen in someone in their 60s or 70s, Baez appears to be leveraging this surprising discovery to springboard to a big payday. There is severe deposition of tau protein in the frontal lobes of the brain (top row).

CTE, which now can be diagnosed only in a dead person's brain tissue, is linked to repeated head trauma and can lead to aggression and dementia.
