Construction Underway on Border Wall Prototype Near San Diego

The area runs parallel to the U.S. -Mexico border and is just a few yards away from a preexisting border fence.

The construction of eight prototypes for Donald Trump's proposed border wall, a signature campaign pledge a year ago, started Tuesday in San Diego, California, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement.

In a statement released on Tuesday, CBP says that four of the wall prototypes will be constructed from concrete, while the remaining four will be made of "alternate or other materials". The following companies were selected to build them: Caddell Construction; KWR Construction Inc. of Sierra Vista, Arizona; ELTA North America Inc. of Annapolis Junction, Maryland; and W.G. Yates & Sons. "First, given their robust physical characteristics - for example, they will be between 18 and 30 feet high - the "other materials" border-wall prototypes are created to deter illegal crossings in the area in which they are constructed".

President Donald Trump's push, via an executive order, for "immediate construction of a physical wall", some portions of which would fall within county lines, has prompted an array of reaction from county and city officials in a region with about 170,000 residents living in the country illegally. CBP's acting deputy commissioner, Ronald Vitiello, said the agency is committed to securing the border and "that includes constructing border walls". During the president's speech in Alabama Friday night, he talked about final choices being made with respect to the wall.

Completion of the wall prototype construction is expected within approximately 30 days of the Notice to Proceed.

"If you're in favor of the wall, you're entitled to speak in favor of it but peacefully, and that's what we're asking for".

The border wall project is underway despite lack of congressional funding.

There has not been a date set for the ground breaking but starting today through November 10th parking will be prohibited near the site.

Building such a wall was one of Trump's key election promises and, because the billions of dollars it will cost have not yet been allocated by Congress, the mogul - who had assured the public that Mexico would actually pay for the wall - has threatened to engineer a partial government shutdown if Democratic lawmakers refuse to include the funds in the budget bill.

"We want to protect our borders".

For many, the construction of these prototypes is nothing more than political banter.
