Catalonia crisis: Spain set to announce steps toward direct rule

"I ask the parliament to meet in a plenary session during which we, the representatives of the citizens' sovereignty, will be able to decide over this attempt to liquidate our government and our democracy and act in outcome", Puigdemont said in a televised speech.

"We are applying Article 155 because the government of a democratic country can not accept that the law is ignored".

In undertaking these steps, the government has four goals, Rajoy said.

Spain's National Security Department said late on Friday that an undisclosed number of government websites had been hit in recent weeks with slogans supporting independence for the country's Catalonia region. "People are removed who put the government outside the law, outside the constitution and outside statutes".

In a significant upping of the stakes in his bid to rein in the region's pro-independence rulers, Mr Rajoy has said that although the Catalan parliament will not be dissolved immediately, its functions will be limited to "avoid measures contrary to the Constitution".

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI will begin at 4:30 PM IST (1100 hrs GMT) since it is a day-night fixture. The Sri Lankan cricket team had come under attack from terrorists in March 2009 in Lahore .

"We are in shock about the suspension of democracy in Catalonia", said Podemo's Pablo Echenique, vowing to work to oust Rajoy and his conservative Popular Party.

Rajoy said new elections should be called for Catalonia within six months but that he wanted it to happen as soon as possible.

The crisis threatens to fracture Spain, one of the European Union's principal members, and has prompted mass public protests.

Puigdemont also demanded Spain end its "repression" of Catalan separatist leaders, two of whom were taken into custody on suspicion of sedition earlier in the week.

King Felipe VI on Friday blasted what he said was an "unacceptable secession attempt" and said the crisis sparked by the region's banned October 1 independence referendum must be resolved "through legitimate democratic institutions".

The DPRK stated that nuclear war could begin at any time
Tillerson said President Trump has always stressed on solving the nuclear testing issue of North Korea diplomatically. Britain's Foreign Secretary said that North Korea's nuclear program should be halted by diplomacy.

Mr Rajoy was notably scant on details and long on justification for direct rule in his speech, essentially limiting his much-anticipated package of specific measures to a broad-brushed description of the whys and wherefores for his government's substitution of the nationalist ministers.

Tens of thousands of independence supporters have gathered in the tense regional capital Barcelona, with Puigdemont, joining the crowds, due to give his response at 9:00 pm (2100 GMT).

"Institutions and member states are clear there is no room, no space of any kind of mediation or worldwide initiative or action", he said, adding that he was in constant contact with Rajoy.

The country's Constitutional Court has so far ruled against all moves toward secession, including the Catalan referendum. But he suspended the effects of the declaration to allow for talks.

Puigdemont says he has a mandate to declare independence after the referendum, which his administration says resulted in a 90 percent Yes vote.

Following criticism, Twitter CEO says 'new rules' on abusive tweets coming soon
However, he also said that it's not as high a priority as enforcing rules on trolls and people putting out abusive tweets. In a series of tweets, Dorsey mentioned how the company has chose to take an "aggressive stance" in the change of rules.

Barcelona resident Rosa Isart said the Spanish government's determination to prevent Catalonia from leaving reminded her of Franco's dictatorship decades ago. Well over 1,000 businesses have moved their legal headquarters out of Catalonia in the last month.
