Woman mauled to death by pitbull had been getting death threats

A woman has been mauled to death by her own dogs, say authorities in Virginia, who described it as "absolutely grisly" attack.

As was her habit, 22-year-old Bethany Stephens took her dogs for a walk in the woods near her childhood home in Goochland, Va., about 30 miles outside Richmond.

"There were various articles of clothing, underclothing scattered about the area, not far from the body and torn into small pieces".

The Sheriff says it appears the young woman had plenty of defensive wounds, meaning she desperately tried to fend off the dogs before her death.

According to police, the woman's father reported her missing and called 911 saying he hadn't seen his daughter in almost two days. "Any dog from any breed can be aggressive, it matters how it's treated". He said, "It appeared the attack was a violent attack initiated by the victims' dogs while the victim was out for a walk with the dog".

Pike said, "I don't know anything about these dogs or her personal relationship with them, but there are likely to have been precursors to this, I suspect, either in terms of fear and anxiety or potentially aggression issues in either one of these dogs to have happened this way". Learn asked. "Were they being attacked by somebody, were they trying to defend themselves and their owner from somebody else, from a wild animal?"

Friends said Ms Stephens had received death threats before the tragedy, which was another reason why they questioned whether the dogs were to blame, WRIC reported.

He spotted her but thought she was only hurt.

"They'd kill you with kisses".

"In my 40 years of law enforcement, I've never seen anything like it", Sheriff Agnew said.

Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew says her body was being guarded by two very large pit bulls.

For reference, Agnew said Stephens is "petite" and weighed around 125 pounds.

The animals, which were later tranquilised, are being held at Goochland County animal control and authorities want to put the canines down. "Hope I never see anything like it again". According to Barbara, the two brindle-colored dogs even slept with Bethany in her bed.

Goochland County Sheriff's Office is working to have the dogs euthanized.
