Nevada marijuana industry reacts to possible federal crackdown

It came days after California became the sixth and largest state so far to legalize the drug for recreational use.

Sessions did not order a new crackdown on pot sales and use, but told federal prosecutors they could act as they see fit in their districts, leaving the course of implementation unclear.

According to Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, the state of Oregon received over $60 million in state taxes from the recreational marijuana industry. As long as Congress doesn't revise the law in accordance with the wishes of voters in at least 29 USA states, the Attorney General office is tasked precisely with applying it as is.

"This is a direct betrayal of President Trump's campaign promise, which he made in Colorado", Kopel told TAC on Thursday.

Q: Will this affect medical marijuana?

Sessions' action essentially shifts federal policy from the hands-off approach adopted under the Obama administration to unleashing federal prosecutors to decide individually how to prioritize resources to crack down on pot possession, distribution and cultivation of the drug in those states.

Another 21 states have medical marijuana laws on the books, including red states like Arkansas, which passed its ballot referendum in 2016, and Florida, which put its own measure over the top by a whopping 71 percent at the polls.

Jeff Sessions has stated that it is up to Congress to change federal law regarding marijuana, and until such a change occurs, it is up to him as Attorney General to enforce federal laws as they are.

"We use the money we get from marijuana sales to fund our school resource officer and to bring in a D.A.R.E officer to speak to the schools", North Bend City Administrator Terence O'Connor said.

However, Jeff Sessions' stand point is strictly speaking correct.

Marijuana has never been legal under federal law, and it still isn't. He said the Trump administration's position "defies facts and logic". His legislation has support on both sides of the aisle, he insists, but members who oppose it have kept it from coming to a floor vote.

Funding for such startups has been on an upswing since Colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana use in 2014. However, it is not clear whether the so-called Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment will pass in the current spending bill.

Acting Supreme Court Justice W. Brooks DeBow rejected the companies' contention that the law enabling medical marijuana production in the state meant to restrict the number of companies to five. If not, people who have depended on cannabis and cannabis products to ease suffering-whether it be from epileptic seizures and the side effects of chemotherapy, or chronic pain and glaucoma-may soon be at risk.

"I don't think it's going to slow down anything at all", Williams said.

"This needs to be a state choice".

The Obama-era policy recognized marijuana as a "dangerous drug", but said the Justice Department expected states and localities that authorized various uses to effectively regulate and police it.
