Japan urges Suu Kyi to ensure Rohingya's safe return

Sittwe: Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation after Myanmar has admitted its soldiers' role in the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslims that were found in a mass grave, outside Inn Din, a village in Rakhine State.

"Some villagers from Inn Din village and security members confessed they killed 10 Bengali terrorists", the office said in its post, using a pejorative term for Rohingya and blaming militants for causing the unrest in the village.

The exact number of the returnees is still unknown.

"It was found that there were no conditions to transfer the 10 Bengali terrorists to the police station and so it was made a decision to kill them".

Myanmar insists that the Rohingya minority are illegal migrants from Bangladesh, hence the references to "Bengalis" in official statements.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo covered the unrest in Myanmar's northwestern Rakhine state, where some 655,000 Rohingyas have been forced to flee into Bangladesh to escape a scorched earth campaign against them by military forces.

After posing another question, an Abbeville city marshal on duty at the meeting grabbed Hargrave and removed her from the meeting. It remains unclear whether the marshal was acting on his own accord or on orders of the board members, according to KATC .

The European Union and representatives of Muslim nations renewed calls for a broader worldwide investigation into violence in the western state of Rakhine, after the military said on Wednesday its soldiers had killed 10 captured Rohingya Muslim "terrorists" at the beginning of September.

Refugees who have fled in their hundreds of thousands to Bangladesh have given consistent accounts of massacres, rape and torture by Myanmar security forces flanked by ethnic Rakhine mobs.

Both the United Nations and USA have stated that he military's action has amounted to ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslim minority in majority Buddhist Myanmar. "This incident happened because ethnic Buddhist villagers were threatened and provoked by the terrorists".

"The army will take charge of those who are responsible for the killings and who broke the rules of engagement". Then members of the security forces shot them dead, the military said.

The military's statement on Wednesday said due to ongoing attacks, security forces deemed it impossible to bring the 10 men to the police station and decided instead to execute the suspects at the village cemetery on the morning after their capture.

Myanmar's civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has no control over the military, but has faced fierce global criticism for failing to do more to protect the Rohingya.

He was part of the Apollo 10 crew that orbited the moon in May 1969 in preparation for the first landing later that year. Spaceflight just lost one of its better-known icons: NASA astronaut John Young has died at the age of 87.

"This grisly admission is a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing", James Gomez, Amnesty International's regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, told RFA.
